European Leaders Applaud US Tariff Suspension
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen commented on X that "the day is ending on a better note than it began," welcoming Trump’s move to rule out taking Greenland by force and pausing the trade dispute. He emphasized the need to address American security concerns in the Arctic while respecting the boundaries of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof described the development as “positive,” noting that Europe and the US are “on the path to de-escalation.”
He highlighted the importance of cooperation among the US, Canada, and Europe within NATO “to strengthen security in the Arctic region and counter threats from Russia and China.”
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard also praised Trump’s decision, saying it was “good that Trump has now also backed away from tariffs against us who have supported Denmark and Greenland.” She stressed that Europe would not allow itself to be blackmailed and credited allied efforts for influencing the outcome.
Sweden’s Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson echoed this sentiment, pointing out that European pressure had been "valuable."
She reiterated that the government has consistently rejected the “absurd” blackmail surrounding Greenland and emphasized the need to safeguard Europe’s economic independence. “I will continue my work to ‘Trump-proof’ our economy,” she affirmed.
